Les pics épidémiques des grippes, gastro et rhumes sont toujours atteints en hiver. Pourquoi ces virus sévissent plus à une telle période et quel rapport avec l’environnement ? Pour comprendre quel rôle joue l’environnement sur les virus il faut savoir que ceux-ci ont plusieurs modes de transmission. Cela peut être par l’air pour la grippe par exemple ou par contact pour la gastro-entérite.

La grippe, comment on l’attrape ?

Le virus de la grippe craint la chaleur et la sécheresse et ne survit que très peu de temps hors d’un hôte. Pas de risque d’attraper la grippe en touchant un objet. C’est la projection de micro-gouttelettes infectées (suite à une toux, éternuement…) qui va répandre le virus. Ainsi la survie du virus dans les micro-gouttelettes est favorisée si l’environnement est froid et humide ce qui est le cas en hiver.

La gastro, comment l’éviter ?

Le virus de la gastro-entérite est lui bien plus résistant, il survit (donc) très bien en extérieur et peut donc être transmis de manière indirecte via des surfaces, nourritures ou eau infectée. La matière fécale est un vecteur important de ce virus. Une hygiène irréprochable (lavage des mains, pas de cuisine pour d’autres, désinfections des surfaces) est donc de mise en cas d’infection pour éviter la contamination d’autres individus.

Il y a plusieurs hypothèses pour expliquer la recrudescence de gastro-entérites et autres virus en hiver. Une première explication vient du confinement des personnes dans des environnements fermés (transports en commun, magasins, maisons) et du manque d’aération. 

Le manque d’UVs est aussi une hypothèse, les UVs détruisent les virus, avec le manque d’UVs en hiver il y aurait plus de virus (ceci est encore à l’étude est reste donc une hypothèse). De plus, le manque de vitamines D dû à la diminution des UVs pourrait expliquer une système immunitaire plus faible.

Une vulnérabilité accrue en hiver, voici une autre hypothèse non prouvée(s) actuellement mais qui est en étude. Le corps possède des mécanismes pour se protéger des virus. Le mucus de la cavité nasale et des bronches permet de retenir les virus et des les éliminer hors du corps. Cette protection serait diminuée l’hiver. Inspirer de l’air froid directement par la bouche provoque une irritation des muqueuses et facilite (un passage) le passage des virus. L’air froid, le tabac ou encore la pollution de l’air sont des facteurs aggravant de l’irritation. Il est donc mieux de respirer au maximum par le nez en hiver. 

Vous l’aurez compris il n’y a pas de secret pour éviter la transmission. Il faut aérer au moins 10 minutes par jour, bien se laver les mains, diminuer la pollution intérieure et pourquoi pas continuer la marche à pied ou le vélo en s’habillant chaudement pour limiter le temps passé dans les transports en commun.
