Le réchauffement climatique est un sujet qui est voué à prendre de l’ampleur étant donné la situation environnementale. Pour certains c’est une invention, pour d’autres un sujet de plaisanteries mais la communauté scientifique est unanime pour affirmer que la question ne doit pas être prise à la légère. Un réchauffement climatique de plus de 2 degrés peut avoir des conséquences irréversibles pour l’environnement et pour la santé des populations.

Les effets directs du réchauffement climatique sur la santé :

  • Une sous-alimentation et une malnutrition des populations les plus pauvres :

Les populations les plus démunies ne pourront pas lutter contre la hausse des prix engendrés par de mauvaises récoltes, elles s’en retrouveront directement impactées.

  • Une mortalité liée aux évènements extrêmes (vagues de chaleur…) : 

Lors de la canicule de 2003 une surmortalité de + de 55% a été enregistrée en France. Les personnes âgées ont été très touchées. Cette canicule a aussi provoqué une baisse de 20% des récoltes. De plus dans les villes, il existe des îlots de chaleur urbain, ce sont des élévations de températures localisées de par une configuration qui favorise l’absorption, l’accumulation puis le relargage de chaleur ; les zones à forte végétation (parc, eau, espace vert…) permettent d’éviter ce phénomène.

  • Une mortalité et un taux de morbidité liés aux maladies infectieuses va augmenter aussi bien dans les pays en développement 

Une augmentation de température va favoriser l’expansion des insectes, vecteurs d’infections (moustiques, tiques…). Les causes de cette expansion sont simples : les températures hivernales plus douces augmentant la période d’activité et de reproduction de ce type d’insectes. Ainsi il y a un risque d’expansion de maladies comme la dengue, la fièvre jaune ou encore le chikungunya dont les moustiques sont des vecteurs. De plus, les conditions de sécheresses en été, incitent à stocker l’eau dans des citernes ce qui est propice à la prolifération des moustiques. Dans des pays développés comme l’Australie, les rats sont un problème majeur puisqu’ils quittent les lieux où la nourriture manque pour aller dans les villes et par la même occasion, ils sont des vecteurs de maladies pour les animaux comme pour les hommes.

Les pays en développement sont en plus menacés par des infections propagées par l’eau (choléra dont le réchauffement climatique crée un environnement favorable pour le bacille responsable de cette infection…) et l’alimentation.

Les effets indirects du réchauffement climatique sur la santé : 

  • Le caractère aléatoire des intempéries (précipitations, sécheresse, tempêtes, inondations, incendies…) 

Les sécheresses et les changements de schéma de précipitations (pluies fortes mais plus rares) perturbent les ressources en eau. Ceci implique moins d’eau potable disponible dans certaines régions ou alors une eau de qualité dégradée. On retrouve une hausse en charge de sédiments et polluants provenant des fortes pluies et une accumulation des polluants durant les périodes de sécheresses. De plus, les tempêtes, incendies ou sécheresses… ont bien évidemment un impact négatif sur les rendements de la plupart des cultures. Ceci à l’échelle mondiale va provoquer un climat d’insécurité alimentaire surtout pour les populations des pays les plus pauvres.

  • Les intempéries et la montée des eaux

La montée des eaux est due à la fonte des glaces, elle risque de provoquer des dégâts matériels (destruction d’habitations, d’infrastructures…) ce qui amène à des mouvements de populations aussi bien dans les pays en développement que développés.

La fonte des glaces présente aussi une autre problématique qui est l’émergence de microorganismes pathogènes jusque là conservés dans celles-ci.

  • Le réchauffement climatique pourrait-il avoir des effets sur le microbiote humain* ?

Quel rapport entre le microbiote humain et le réchauffement climatique ? Des études ponctuelles ont montré que chez les lézards (Zootoca vivipara) une augmentation de la température de seulement 2 à 3°C, entraîne une diminution de la biodiversité de leur microbiote ayant des conséquences négatives sur leur survie. L’impact sur le microbiote humain reste totalement inexploré, cette théorie reste une hypothèse qu’il est nécessaire d’investiguer avec des études plus poussées. Par contre, il est déjà connu qu’une modification du microbiote intestinal humain et le développement de dysbioses (déséquilibre du microbiote avec prolifération de microorganisme ayant des effets pathologiques pour l’hôte) sont liés à des maladies inflammatoires, obésité et autres problèmes d’ordre médical…

*ensemble des bactéries, champignons et autres micro-organismes que le corps humain contient en grand nombre.

  • Les causes du réchauffement climatique (gaz à effet de serre d’origine anthropique) ont des conséquences directes sur la santé des populations 

Les pathologies respiratoires et cardiovasculaires peuvent être aggravés à cause de la pollution atmosphérique (ozone, SOx, NOx…). L’accroissement des températures a aussi un impact direct sur les allergies. En effet, la saison pollinique s’étend sur une période plus longue et des plantes comme l’ambroisie qui est très allergisante prolifèrent d’autant plus. Les populations des pays développées et pays fortement pollués (principalement responsable des émissions des gaz à effet de serre) s’en retrouveront les principaux impactés.

Des impacts positifs du réchauffement climatique ? 

Pour être totalement objectif, il ne faut pas oublier de préciser qu’indirectement le réchauffement climatique à quelques côtés positifs mêmes s’ils sont loin de contrebalancer les effets négatifs. 

Le réchauffement climatique permet une baisse de la mortalité liée au froid dans certaines régions (en Europe par exemple).

D’après une étude de Santé Publique, en France, entre 2000 et 2010, 3,9 % de la mortalité totale dans les villes était attribuable au froid et 1,2 % à la chaleur. Une légère augmentation des températures peut avoir un effet bénéfique pour l’agriculture dans certaines régions spécifiques qui étaient froides (mais au global l’impact sur l’agriculture reste négatif).

Des gestes simples peuvent prévenir certains risques liés au réchauffement climatique 

  • Concernant les risques liés à la chaleur : restez hydraté et dans des lieux où la température est raisonnable (en intérieur ou dans des parcs ombragés où la température est plus basse), assurez vous que les enfants et personnes âgées ne restent pas seuls dans des lieux où la température est élevée. 

  • Contre les tiques portez des chaussettes hautes et pantalon si vous sortez en forêt (ils proviennent du sol notamment les herbes hautes…). Retirez les tiques avec une pince spéciale et en cas de doutes ou l’apparition d’alvéoles allez consulter un médecin.

  • Les moustiquaires peuvent présenter une première protection contre les moustiques. Des vaccins existent contre les maladies dont les moustiques sont les vecteurs mais certains ne sont pas autorisés en Europe pour le moment. Les produits répulsifs, prises, huiles essentiels… peuvent être efficaces mais à terme ne sont pas bons pour la santé ; donc à utiliser avec modération surtout pour les enfants.

 

  • Les rats/souris présentent un risque direct en cas de morsures mais il faut savoir que leurs déjections le sont aussi ainsi que les parasites qu’ils peuvent transporter, donc un intérieur propre (en favorisant des produits sanitaires respectueux de votre santé : savon noir, bicarbonate de soude, vinaigre…) permet de se protéger.
