Incendies : quels sont les risques pour la santé ?

Les feux et incendies représentent un vrai risque pour la santé, ils dégagent diverses substances et polluants à nocifs qui se retrouvent dans les fumées et les dépôts de suies. Certains bons gestes sont à adopter pour se protéger.

La nature des fumées émises lors d’un incendie varie selon le combustible, sa densité, l’humidité… Ainsi un feu de forêt n’a pas le même impact sur la santé qu’un feu provenant d’une usine SEVESO de produits chimiques ou d’une structure contenant du plomb. Des combustibles très différents produisent des pollutions dont la toxicité et les impacts sur la santé à long terme sont variables.

Les feux de forêt présentent en premier lieu des risques respiratoires à cause des particules fines engendrée. Il convient donc de rester chez soi et d’éviter de faire des efforts physiques.

Un feu dont le combustible est un hydrocarbure comme cela a été le cas lors de l’incendie de l’usine SEVESO à Rouen va produire des fumées contenant des composés organiques volatils avec par exemple du benzène. Il reste cependant très compliqué de caractériser toutes les substances présentes. De plus une substance peut être dangereuse mais ne pas faire courir un risque à la population. Actuellement il est impossible de dire sur la zone entourant Rouen s’il y a un risque pour la population. De plus, il faut savoir que les masques pour cycliste ne sont d’aucune utilité, seuls les masques isolants des pompiers peuvent apporter une certaine protection. Une odeur assez forte peut aussi être présente pendant plusieurs jours mais la contamination à Rouen depuis que le feu est maitrisé est surtout causée par ingestion plutôt qu’inhalation.

Lorsqu’une structure brûle celle-ci peut provoquer une pollution importante si elle contient des substances à risque comme l’amiante ou le plomb. Concernant l’amiante et le plomb il faut à tout prix éviter les zones contaminées. De même, les suies qui découlent des incendies chimiques peuvent aussi présenter un potentiel risque pour la santé.

Les feux dégagent diverses substances nocives et à risque pour la santé qui se retrouvent dans les fumées et ensuite les dépôts de suies. A Rouen le problème de pollution vient notamment des hydrocarbures, en effet il n’y a pas eu de dépassement des valeurs guides annuelles (20µg/m3) de particules fines 10 µm ni des autres polluants normalement mesurés (NO2, O3, PM2.5) et concernant les composés organiques volatils seul le benzène a été détecté dans l’air 6 fois au-dessus du seuil défini par l’ANSES de 30µg/m3. Le benzène est un cancérogène avéré pour l’homme sur la base de leucémies.

Les hydrocarbures, qui ont été un des combustibles de ce feu, sont une famille de composés dont certains sont classés cancérogènes avérés, probables et possibles. Ils peuvent notamment être à l’origine de cancers des poumons, de carcinome de la peau et tumeurs des voies urinaires, ils ont aussi des effets mutagènes.

L’amiante est un polluant qui était présent dans la toiture des bâtiments de l’usine. L’amiante peut occasionner une fibrose pulmonaire qui est une maladie grave. Cependant il n’est pas sûr que l’amiante se soit réellement répandue, des analyses sont en cours.

Le fait d’avoir été exposé aux fumées pourrait donc potentiellement être à l’origine de cancers et maladies chroniques respiratoires/ cardiovasculaires et autres sur le long terme. A court terme il n’y a pas eu de toxicité aigue des fumées ou suies pour les humains (effet néfaste après une seule exposition). Cependant 40% des alertes de riverains concernaient des alertes liées à la santé avec des cas de vomissements, nausées et maux de tête.
