Le #JourDuDépassement est arrivé et cela encore plus tôt que les autres années. Qu’est-ce que « signifie le jour du dépassement de la Terre » ? C’est tout simplement le jour de l’année à partir duquel l’humanité est supposée avoir consommé l’ensemble des ressources que la planète est capable de régénérer en un an. Ainsi, ce jour est censé tomber le 31 décembre or depuis plus de 50 ans ce jour s’éloigne du 31 décembre et tombe cette année le 29 juillet. Cela implique qu’à partir du 30 juillet et jusqu’au 31 décembre 2019 l’humanité va se servir de manière irréversible dans les réserves de la Terre or ces réserves seront non renouvelables (à l’échelle humaine).

Comment est déterminé le #JourDuDépassement ?

Ce jour est calculé par l’ONG américaine Global Footprint Network via plus de 3 millions de données statistiques. Le calcul fait le ratio entre la capacité de production biologique de la planète et l’empreinte écologique de l’humanité, ce ratio est ensuite multiplié par 365 (nombre de jours dans l’année). Si l’empreinte écologique de l’homme est égale ou inférieure à la capacité de production biologique de la planète alors le résultat est égal ou supérieur à 365, donc aucun risque pour la planète ; par contre si l’empreinte écologique est supérieure à la biocapacité de la planète alors la valeur finale est inférieure à 365 et l’humanité sera en sursis. La valeur de cette année est 210. Concrètement sur les 365 jours de l’année, l’humanité a épuisé ses réserves en 210 jours et vit en sursis à partir du 211ème jour et cela jusqu’à la fin de l’année.

Les sources de ce dépassement :

Ce jour est calculé mondialement mais dans les pays ayant une consommation comme la France ou l’Europe ce jour tomberait début mai ! De quoi alerter sur la surconsommation des ressources.  L’empreinte écologique est élevée et augmente chaque année car les activités comme la surpêche, l’élevage intensif, les cultures, le déboisement, la construction, la production d’énergies fossiles, et les émissions de CO2 et gaz à effet de serre sont omniprésents. Ainsi il nous faudrait 1,75 Terre pour pouvoir continuer nos activités humaines sans pour autant épuiser de manière irréversible les ressources de la planète.

Quelles conséquences de vivre à crédit ?

Cette surconsommation des ressources a déjà des conséquences visibles comme des pénuries d’eau (potable), la désertification, l’érosion des sols, la chute de productivité agricoles, la diminution du nombre de poissons, la déforestation et la disparition d’espèces.

Agir pour la planète : il est possible d’inverser la tendance !

Pour éviter de vivre en sursis de plus en plus tôt dans l’année, chacun peut agir avec des gestes simples, par exemple :

  • réduire le gaspillage alimentaire permettrait de gagner 10 jours par an,
  • réduire sa consommation de protéines animales de moitié reculerait la date du dépassement de 15 jours car la production de protéines animales engendre beaucoup de gaz à effet de serre et est très consommatrice en eau,
  • prendre les transports en commun ou le vélo à la place de la voiture, ou éviter une utilisation intensive de la clim ou du chauffage sont aussi de petits gestes qui ont de l’impact.
