L’ozone est un polluant atmosphérique bien connu pour ses effets nocifs sur la santé humaine et la végétation. Il se forme dans les basses couches de l’atmosphère, principalement pendant l’été et sous l’influence du rayonnement solaire et des températures élevées.

L’odeur de la pluie vient de l’ozone présent dans l’air 

Quand un orage approche, on peut souvent dire qu’on sent la pluie arriver, et c’est vrai ! 

Un orage suit toujours les mêmes étapes, chacune produisant des odeurs distinctives. Avant que la pluie ne commence à tomber, une odeur fraîche et semblable à celle de l’eau de Javel peut être perçue; il s’agit de l’odeur âcre de l’ozone.

💡 L’ozone vient du Grec Ancien ozein signifiant « sentir ».

L’ozone est un polluant que l’on retrouve dans les basses couches de l’atmosphère, principalement à cause des activités anthropiques, mais aussi lors d’un orage où la foudre transforme l’azote et le dioxygène naturellement présents en ozone. S’il est habituellement présent en altitude, le vent transporte l’ozone au niveau du sol et de notre nez, qui peut en percevoir l’odeur à de très faibles concentrations.

Pendant la pluie, l’odeur de l’ozone est masquée par deux autres odeurs qui sont des conséquences directes de l’impact de la pluie sur le sol : le pétrichor et le géosmine.

💡 Le petrichor vient des mots grecs petri > « pierre » et ichor > « sang divin »

💡 Géosmine signifie « odeur de la Terre » en Grec Ancien

Toutes deux sont dues à une accumulation de molécules produites par les plantes et les bactéries, en période de sécheresse, dans les sols et à la surface des roches, du béton et de l’asphalte.

Au contact de l’eau de pluie, ces molécules dégagent une odeur de terre distinctive à laquelle nous sommes beaucoup plus sensibles que l’ozone. Plus la période de sécheresse est longue, plus ces odeurs sont fortes; c’est pourquoi nous la considérons souvent comme une odeur d’orage d’été.

Après la pluie, les odeurs de pétrichor et de géosmine s’estompent pour laisser à nouveau place à l’arôme frais de l’ozone jusqu’à ce qu’il disparaisse.

Le paradoxe de l’ozone

L’ozone (O3) est un polluant secondaire et est causé par la présence de ses précurseurs, une température élevée et le rayonnement solaire. Son principal précurseur est le dioxyde d’azote (NO2), principalement causé par la pollution du trafic.

Cependant, les concentrations d’ozone sont très souvent plus élevées dans les zones rurales, où la pollution au dioxyde d’azote est assez faible : c’est ce qu’on appelle le paradoxe de l’ozone. Cela s’explique par le fait que l’ozone se forme à partir de la pollution mais se dégrade aussi grâce à elle, notamment grâce au monoxyde d’azote (NO).

💡 Si les villes sont légèrement moins polluées à l’ozone que la campagne, cela ne signifie pas qu’elles ne sont pas polluées du tout !

On s’explique : 

A cause du trafic routier, le NO et le NO2 sont très concentrés dans les villes et quasi absents en campagne.

Lorsque l’ensolleillement est plus fort et que les témpératures sont plus élevées en journée, le NO2 urbain est transformé en O3. L’O3 peut ensuite être transporté par le vent dans les zones rurales contrairement au NO qui lui se dégrade avant.

Le NO, présent dans les villes dû au trafic routier, peut réagir en retour avec l’O3 pour former du NO2. Cela engendre une diminution certaine de la concentration en O3 dans les villes. Cependant, l’O3 continue de s’accumuler dans les zones rurales où il se dégrade très lentement en absence de NO.

Cela explique pourquoi on remarque souvent que la concentration en ozone est plus élevée en campagne.

Cela explique aussi le paradoxe qui apparait dans les villes lorsque des mesures anti-pollution sont prises ou encore le « weekend effect » : lorsqu’il y a moins de trafic routier le week-end ou que celui-ci est limité, moins d’oxydes d’azote sont relâchés. L’ozone est donc moins formé mais aussi beaucoup moins dégradé, ce qui entraîne une augmentation temporaire de l’ozone dans les villes avant une diminution stable.

Le trou dans la couche d’ozone est en train de se résorber

Si le trou dans la couche d’ozone est un fait connu de tous, son rétrécissement actuel l’est beaucoup moins. En effet, il s’agit d’un processus très long. La couche d’ozone stratosphérique, ou « bon » ozone, absorbe les rayons UV nocifs pour la santé.

En raison de l’industrialisation massive et de l’émission d’aérosols (CFC), cette couche s’est amincie au fil des ans et notamment au-dessus de l’Antarctique : c’est ce qu’on appelle le « trou » dans la couche d’ozone. Depuis la ratification du Protocole de Montréal en 1987 visant à réduire et, à terme, éliminer les substances appauvrissant la couche d’ozone (SAO), environ 98% de ces substances ont été progressivement éliminées et la couche protectrice d’ozone se reconstitue.

Celle-ci devrait être entièrement reconstituée d’ici à 2060, voire plus tôt pour certaines régions.

Ce protocole a eu des effets bénéfiques impressionnants sur la santé et l’environnement :

👉 D’ici à 2030, environ 2 millions de cancers de la peau seront évités chaque année.

👉 Le risque de problèmes oculaires, comme la cataracte, est largement limité.

👉 Les SAO étant de puissants gaz à effet de serre, le réchauffement climatique actuel est inférieur de 0,5 à 1°C par rapport à ce qu’il aurait été sans le protocole.

Le Protocole de Montréal a été mis à jour à plusieurs reprises pour faire face aux nouveaux risques. La dernière mise à jour est l’amendement de Kigali (mis en application en 2019) qui se concentre principalement sur les risques environnementaux et le réchauffement climatique en ciblant les émissions de gaz à effet de serre.

Ce protocole et ses puissants résultats sont aujourd’hui l’un des meilleurs exemples de ce qui peut être réalisé lorsque le monde entier travaille ensemble, même si cela prend du temps.
