Incendies au Canada : le nuage de fumée est arrivé en France
Depuis ce lundi 26 juin, les fumées résultant des immenses incendies qui ravagent les forêts canadiennes depuis le mois de mai ont atteints plusieurs pays européens, dont la France.

Que se passe-t-il au Canada ?
Depuis le début de l’année, le Canada est confronté à des incendies d’une violence exceptionnelle, avec plus de 7 millions d’hectares déjà ravagés par les flammes. Sur l’ensemble du pays, le Centre interservices des feux de forêt du Canada (CIFFC) recense 470 feux actifs, dont 244 hors de contrôle.
Les épais nuages de fumée émanant de ces incendies dévastateurs ont causé d’importantes détériorations de la qualité de l’air au-delà de l’océan Atlantique. Les États-Unis et la Norvège ont déjà été durement touchés par ces conséquences, et malheureusement, la France est le prochain pays à en subir les effets.
Une qualité de l’air en Europe normalement pas impactée
Les fumées provenant des incendies au Canada ont atteint la péninsule ibérique, ainsi que l’Irlande et le Royaume-Uni, et elles finiront par traverser la France, les pays du Benelux et l’Allemagne avant de se diriger vers l’est, selon les déclarations de Mark Parrington, scientifique du Service de surveillance de l’atmosphère de Copernicus (CAMS).
Ces particules vont parcourir une distance de plus de 5000 kilomètres et se trouveront principalement en altitude, il est donc peu probable qu’elles aient un impact significatif sur la qualité de l’air en Europe. Cependant, une partie de ces particules pourrait descendre plus près du sol et ainsi affecter la qualité de l’air.
Pendant quelques jours, il sera possible d’observer un ciel d’un bleu plus pâle que d’habitude, avec une apparence « laiteuse », c’est le cas dans la ville de Nantes ce mardi 27 juin.
Cependant, les concentrations de particules ne seront pas aussi élevées qu’à New York et Montréal, qui ont temporairement été les villes les plus polluées du monde pendant quelques heures.
Ces fumées provenant du Canada sont-elles dangereuses pour la santé ?
Ces fumées d’incendie contiennent des concentrations élevées d’aérosols, qui désignent les particules fines en suspension. Elles sont composées notamment de monoxyde de carbone, un produit résultant de la combustion incomplète. Ce composé a une durée de vie atmosphérique d’environ un mois, ce qui en fait un indicateur précis du transport des fumées, comme l’a souligné le scientifique.
Les quantités de particules qui nous parviennent du Canada seront relativement faibles. Cependant, le danger des particules ultrafines réside dans leur taille réduite, qui leur permet de pénétrer profondément dans notre organisme en franchissant les barrières sanguines. Elles s’accumulent ainsi à long terme dans nos organes, en particulier le cœur, où elles augmentent les risques d’accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC), ainsi que dans le cerveau, où elles accroissent potentiellement le risque de développer la maladie d’Alzheimer et de Parkinson.
À court terme, ces particules irritent nos voies respiratoires, déjà mises à rude épreuve par les précédents pics de pollution à l’ozone, aux particules fines et aux pollens des derniers mois. Cela peut favoriser le développement de l’asthme, de la toux et même d’infections respiratoires chez les personnes les plus fragiles. Cependant, il est important de souligner que ce n’est pas la pollution en provenance du Canada qui est dangereuse en soi, mais plutôt le fait qu’elle s’ajoute à notre propre pollution déjà excessive.
Se protéger de la fumée d’incendie
De manière générale, il est recommandé d’éviter de sortir pendant les heures de pointe de la circulation routière, entre 8 heures et 10 heures du matin, ainsi qu’en début et en fin d’après-midi, car ce sont les moments les plus pollués de la journée.
Il est également préférable de limiter les déplacements en voiture, car nous sommes quatre fois plus exposés aux particules fines à l’intérieur de notre véhicule que lorsque nous marchons sur le trottoir ou utilisons une piste cyclable et de rester à distance des voies de circulation.
