Les polluants sont nombreux dans l’air que nous respirons et  peuvent avoir des impacts à plus ou moins long terme sur notre santé. Retrouvez les différents polluants de l’air ainsi que leurs effets sur la santé !

1/ Dioxyde d’azote (NO2)

C’est quoi ? : Le NO2 ou dioxyde d’azote est un polluant gazeux. Il a une odeur caractéristique, âcre et piquante.

Quelle est la source ? : Le dioxyde d’azote provient des processus de combustion.

Impact sur la santé ? : Le dioxyde d’azote peut causer des irritations aux yeux, au nez et à la gorge et peut également causer, par inhalation, des irritations des poumons et réduire la fonction pulmonaire. De fortes concentrations de NO2, expose à un risque accru de crise d’asthme, et à un nombre d’hospitalisations en hausse dû à des problèmes du système respiratoire. 2/ Dioxyde de soufre (SO2) (polluants santé)

C’est quoi ? : Le SO2 est un gaz incolore, à l’odeur piquante, semblable à une allumette brûlée. Il peut être à l’origine de pluies acides s’il se combine avec l’eau.

Quelle est la source ? : Le dioxyde de soufre est produit par la combustion des énergies fossiles (charbons et pétrole) et la fonte des minerais de fer contenant du soufre.

Impact sur la santé ? : Le SO2 affecte le système respiratoire, le fonctionnement des poumons et il provoque des irritations oculaires. L’inflammation de l’appareil respiratoire entraîne de la toux, une production de mucus, une exacerbation de l’asthme, des bronchites chroniques et une sensibilisation aux infections respiratoires. Chez les personnes souffrant d’asthme, il peut perturber le fonctionnement pulmonaire même à faible concentration. Les jours de fortes concentrations de SO2, le nombre d’admissions à l’hôpital et  la mortalité augmentent. Polluants ayant donc un impact sur la santé.

3/ L’ozone (O3)

C’est quoi ? : L’ozone est un polluant secondaire, il n’est pas directement produit par une source polluante, mais il est formé, sous l’action du rayonnement solaire qui réagit avec plusieurs polluants « précurseurs ». Plus précisément, il s’agit des oxydes d’azote (NOx) et des composés organiques volatils (COV). Le trafic automobile est le principal responsable de l’émission de ces composés chimiques. Ce gaz possède une odeur typique (odeur après orage avec forte activité électrique). Les épisodes d’ozone, c’est-à-dire de fortes concentrations de ce polluant se produisent au cours des mois de mai, juin, juillet et août, ainsi qu’exceptionnellement à la fin du mois d’avril et au début du mois de septembre. 

NB: l’ozone en tant que polluant se trouve au niveau du sol alors que l’ozone qui nous protège des rayons UV du soleil se trouve dans la couche de la haute atmosphère.

Quelle est la source ? : Plusieurs conditions doivent être remplies pour que des concentrations importantes apparaissent dans les basses couches de l’atmosphère :
–    Un fort ensoleillement. 

–    Une température élevée (au moins 25°C) ;
–    Vent faible ;
–    La présence des polluants à l’origine de la formation de l’ozone : les oxydes d’azote (NOx) et les composés organiques volatils (VOC)

Impact sur la santé ? : En raison de son fort pouvoir oxydant, l’ozone peut occasionner un certain nombre de problèmes de santé plus ou moins graves selon la concentration et les prédispositions de chacun; les activités physiques intenses extérieures sont déconseillées en cas de pics de pollution à l’ozone. Polluants ayant un impact sur la santé.

4/ Le monoxyde de carbone (CO)(polluants santé)

C’est quoi ? : c’est un gaz inodore, incolore et inflammable, le monoxyde de carbone (CO) se forme lors de la combustion incomplète de matières organiques (gaz, charbon, fiouls, carburants, bois).

Quelle est la source ? : Une des sources est le trafic automobile. Des taux importants de CO peuvent être rencontrés quand un moteur tourne au ralenti dans un espace clos. En cas de mauvais fonctionnement d’un appareil de chauffage domestique, des teneurs élevées en CO peuvent également être relevées dans les habitations.

Impact sur la santé ? : Le CO se fixe à la place de l’oxygène sur l’hémoglobine du sang, conduisant à un manque d’oxygène pour  l’organisme (cœur, cerveau…). Les premiers symptômes sont des maux de tête et des vertiges. Ces symptômes s’aggravent avec l’augmentation de la concentration de CO (nausée, vomissements…) et peuvent, en cas d’exposition prolongée, aller jusqu’au coma et à la mort. Les effets à long terme de faibles expositions doivent encore être investigués. Polluants ayant un impact sur la santé.

5/ Les composés organiques volatil (COV)(polluants et santé)

C’est quoi ? : Les composés organiques volatils regroupent plus d’une centaines de composés, qui peuvent être d’origine biogénique (naturelle) ou anthropique (humaine). Les COV sont toutes les molécules formées d’atomes d’hydrogène et de carbone (hydrocarbures), et celles dont les atomes d’hydrogène sont remplacés par d’autres atomes comme l’azote, le chlore, le soufre, ou l’oxygène. Ce sont des gaz et des vapeurs qui peuvent s’évaporer plus ou moins rapidement à température ambiante. Ces composés ont une odeur.

Quelle est la source ? :  Les émissions de la végétation ou d’autres phénomènes naturels tels que les feux de forêts, les éruptions volcaniques, etc, constituent des sources naturelles de COV.

En milieu urbain et/ou industrialisé, ils proviennent en majorité des activités humaines : ils sont émis par des phénomènes de combustion (gaz d’échappement notamment, cheminées d’usines, fours, …) ou par évaporation. Ils sont utilisés dans la fabrication de nombreux produits : vernis, solvants, bougies parfumées, peintures, colles, produits de jardinage, produits ménagers, déodorants, …. 

Impact sur la santé ? : Les COV ont un double effet sur la santé :

  • Un effet indirect, ce sont des précurseurs de l’ozone dans l’air 
  • Un effet direct en tant que substance toxique. Les COV les plus nocifs, comme le benzène ou formaldéhyde, sont classés CMR (cancérogène, mutagène et reprotoxique). Ils font l’objet d’une réglementation renforcée, notamment en milieu professionnel.

6/ Particules fines(polluants et santé)

o   PM10

C’est quoi ? : Les PM10 sont des particules en suspension représentant un mélange complexe de substances chimiques organiques ou inorganiques. La caractéristique que partage les PM10 est un diamètre inférieur à 10 µm (généralement compris entre 10µm et 2.5µm). De part leur taille ces particules ont tendances à sédimenter (retomber au sol sous leur poids ou lors de précipitations)

Quelle est la source ? :  Les principales sources anthropiques sont la combustion de gazole et d’essence des véhicules automobiles, les combustibles domestiques solides (charbon, biomasse…), les activités industrielles, le trafic automobile, les activités agricoles ou minières, les travaux d’excavation.

Impact sur la santé ? : Les PM10 sont peu disposées à passer dans le système sanguin et s’ancrent moins profondément dans les poumons (elles n’atteignent pas les alvéoles pulmonaires) que les particules de taille inférieure. Elles sont surtout à l’origine de problèmes respiratoires. Elles peuvent cependant aussi être liées à des problèmes allergiques et développement de maladies plus diverses si d’autres polluants (pollen, virus, bactéries, polluants cancérogènes…) se retrouvent fixés à leur surface. 

 

o   PM2.5

C’est quoi ? : Les PM2.5 sont des particules en suspension représentant un mélange complexe de composés chimiques organiques ou inorganiques. La caractéristique que partage les PM2.5 est un diamètre inférieur à 2.5 µm (généralement compris entre 1µm et 2.5µm). Les particules PM2.5 restent plus longtemps en suspension dans l’atmosphère que les PM10, elles peuvent rester en suspension pendant des jours, voire plusieurs semaines. Par conséquent, ces particules peuvent être transportées sur de longues distances et subir des transformations physico-chimiques.

Quelle est la source ?  : Les particules d’origine biogénique sont par exemple des particules minérales résultant de l’érosion de sols, du sable d’origine désertique, d’un incendie etc. Les particules  d’origine anthropique sont par exemple les suies provenant du chauffage domestique, les particules émises directement par la combustion des carburants automobiles ou résultant de l’usure des pneumatiques et des freins, ou encore les particules provenant de la remise en suspension des dépôts sur la chaussée par la circulation. 

Impact sur la santé ? : Lorsque les particules fines, notamment les particules inférieures à 2.5µm, pénètrent dans les alvéoles pulmonaires, elles peuvent passer dans la circulation sanguine et provoquer des problèmes graves, notamment infarctus, coronaropathies, troubles du rythme cardiaque et accident vasculaire cérébral. Elles sont aussi liées aux problèmes respiratoires variées ainsi qu’au développement ou à la dégradation de l’état dans certaines maladies psychiatriques comme les schizophrénies, bipolarités…

o   Pollen

C’est quoi ? : Le grain de pollen est l’élément reproducteur mâle des plantes. On distingue deux types principaux de pollens :

  • Les pollens transportés par les animaux qui sont de grandes tailles et généralement peu allergisants. Ils concernent surtout les fleurs généralement voyantes et parfumées ;
  • Les pollens transportés par le vent qui sont très allergisants et de plus petite taille.

Nb : Un grain de pollen a une taille microscopique.

Quelle est la source ?  : La source du pollen sont les plantes et les arbres.  Les taxons retrouvés varient selon les saisons et les régions. Les grains de pollens peuvent se fixer sur des particules fines de diverses natures et un grain de pollen peut lui-même être considéré comme une particule fine. Le diamètre du pollen varie suivant les taxons. 

Impact sur la santé ? : Plus de 20 % de la population française souffre d’allergie respiratoire. Le nombre d’enfants allergiques ne cesse d’augmenter. Une allergie au pollen s’appelle une pollinose. Les symptômes peuvent être bénins comme sévères, voire invalidants (fortes rhinites avec irritations et picotements du nez, crises d’éternuements, conjonctivites et larmoiements…). 

Les quantités de pollen pouvant provoquer une allergie dépendent du pouvoir allergisant du pollen en question (l’ambroisie, le bouleau, les graminées ou le cyprès sont très allergisants par exemple).

7/ Le radon (polluants et santé)

C’est quoi ? : Le radon est un gaz radioactif, incolore et inodore, qui l’on trouve naturellement dans les roches granitiques et volcaniques des massifs anciens (Bretagne, Vosges, centre de la France, Corse, Pyrénées, Rhône-Alpes)

Quelle est la source ?  : La source de radon est naturelle. Il provient de la désintégration du radium et, au départ, de celle de l’uranium. Il est présent naturellement dans les roches et davantage dans les sous-sols granitiques et volcaniques : Bretagne, centre de la France, Alpes, Vosges, Corse. Trente départements à risque sont identifiés en France. 

Impact sur la santé ? : Le radon n’est pas à risque pour la santé  à l’air libre car sa concentration est minime. Il le devient quand il s’accumule dans des espaces confinés. Il est classé comme cancérogène certain (groupe 1) par le CIRC pour le cancer du poumon.  Le radon est la 2ème cause de cancer du poumon, derrière le tabac et devant l’amiante : 9,8% des cas de cancer du poumon seraient dus au radon. L’interaction entre le radon et le tabac multiplie par 3 le risque de cancer du poumon.

Pour l’air intérieur des habitations, l’OMS a divisé par 10 le seuil recommandé pour le radon (passant de 1000 à 100 Bq/m3). Polluants ayant un impact sur la santé.

8/ Pesticides (polluants et santé)

C’est quoi ? : Le terme « pesticide » englobe les produits phytosanitaires, certaines substances biocides ainsi que certains antiparasitaires à usage humain et vétérinaire. Les pesticides peuvent se retrouver sous diverses formes : gazeuses et particulaires (avec des diamètres plus ou moins gros). Les pesticides peuvent être très nombreux dans l’air des études (AASQA) ont retrouvés plus de 114 substances actives dans l’air cela équivalait à 67% des substances qui étaient recherchées. 

Quelle est la source ? : Pendant l’épandage, en fonction des conditions météorologiques et des modes d’applications, de 25% à 75% des produits phytosanitaires ne se déposent pas sur les aires traitées. Ce taux peut même atteindre jusqu’à 90% sur des sols humides. Cela contamine l’air, les brouillards et les pluies.

Impact sur la santé ? : Leurs effets varient selon les pesticides impliqués (ils peuvent avoir des effets de perturbateurs endocriniens, être cancérogènes ou toxiques…).Polluants ayant un impact sur la santé.
