Qu’est-ce que le SMOG ?

Le terme SMOG est un anglicisme de « smoke » (fumée) et « fog » (brouillard). Il décrit la présence d’un épais brouillard chargé de particules en suspension nocives dans l’air, rendant l’atmosphère trouble et potentiellement dangereuse pour la santé humaine et l’écosystème.

Comment se forme le SMOG ?

Le SMOG se forme principalement à partir d’une combinaison complexe de polluants atmosphériques provenant de diverses sources, notamment les activités humaines, les émissions industrielles, le trafic routier avec les gaz d’échappement des véhicules, les produits chimiques, et les réactions atmosphériques.

Il existe deux principaux types de SMOG :

👉 Le SMOG Photochimique :

Ce type de SMOG se forme lorsque les émissions de polluants provenant des véhicules, des usines et d’autres sources réagissent sous l’influence des rayons du soleil.

Les oxydes d’azote (NOx) et les composés organiques volatils (COV) sont des précurseurs clés de ce type de SMOG. En présence de lumière solaire, ces composés chimiques réagissent pour former des polluants atmosphériques, comme l’ozone troposphérique, le peroxyacétyl nitrate (PAN), et d’autres composés nuisibles pour la santé humaine et l’environnement.

Il est également connu sous le nom de SMOG d’été car ce type de SMOG se forme lorsque les températures sont plus élevées et que la lumière solaire est abondante.

👉 Le SMOG Sulfureux :

Ce type de SMOG est plus commun dans les régions où la combustion de charbon ou d’autres combustibles fossiles est utilisée de manière intensive.

Il se compose principalement de particules fines, de dioxyde de soufre (SO2) et de fumée, formant un brouillard dense et toxique.

On peut l’appeler SMOG hivernal suite à l’utilisation massive du bois de chauffage. Les conditions hivernales, avec une atmosphère plus stable et des températures plus froides, peuvent entraîner l’accumulation de particules fines et de dioxyde de soufre (SO2) près du sol, formant ainsi ce type de SMOG.

Comment les reconnaître ? Le smog peut avoir différentes couleurs qui vous renseignent sur les polluants atmosphériques impliqués :

* il est important de noter que la couleur spécifique du smog peut être le résultat d’une combinaison complexe de différents polluants présents dans l’air extérieur et des conditions météorologiques locales.

Différence entre brouillard et SMOG

Le SMOG et le brouillard sont deux phénomènes atmosphériques distincts, bien qu’ils puissent parfois sembler similaires.

SMOG et brouillard : la différence

Le SMOG est une brume polluée formée comme vu précédemment par la réaction de gaz d’échappement et de produits chimiques dans l’air, souvent due à l’activité humaine, alors que le brouillard est de la vapeur d’eau condensée dans l’air, se produisant lorsque l’humidité atmosphérique est élevée et que la température chute. La principale différence réside dans leur composition : le SMOG contient des polluants, tandis que le brouillard est essentiellement de l’eau condensée.

On le distingue facilement du brouillard car il est dense, très épais, brun, gris ou jaunâtre. De plus, le SMOG peut avoir une odeur piquante ou irritante due aux polluants chimiques, tandis que le brouillard n’a généralement pas d’odeur spécifique.

💡 Bon à savoir :Le SMOG est généralement associé à des zones urbaines denses et à la pollution, alors que le brouillard peut se former dans divers environnements, tant urbains que ruraux, en fonction des conditions météorologiques.

Impacts du SMOG sur la santé :

Le SMOG, une forme de pollution de l’air extérieur, constitue une menace sérieuse pour la santé respiratoire. En effet, il est directement lié à des affections touchant les poumons. Cet air pollué est associé à des problèmes et maladies respiratoires tels que l’asthme, les maladies pulmonaires et cardiovasculaires, ainsi qu’à une augmentation des risques de cancer. Il est irritant pour le nez, les yeux et la gorge, particulièrement lorsqu’il survient au printemps à la saison des pollens. Ce cocktail de polluants de l’air représente un danger pour la santé. Les enfants, les femmes enceintes et les personnes âgées sont les plus exposés au smog dont les effets sont proches de celui de la cigarette.

💡 Bon à savoir : En décembre 1952, Londres disparaît sous un épais SMOG pendant 4 jours. Selon un rapport de la revue Environmental Health Perspectives publié en 2004, près de 12.000 personnes auraient perdu la vie en raison de cet épisode de pollution atmosphérique.

Impacts du SMOG sur l’environnement :

En plus d’avoir un impact sur la qualité de l’air, le SMOG peut endommager la végétation – en altérant leur capacité à réaliser la photosynthèse – et perturber les écosystèmes terrestres et aquatique, dus aux dépôts acides souvent présent dans le smog.
