Qu’est-ce que le dioxyde de soufre (SO2) ? 

Le dioxyde de soufre (SO2) est un gaz incolore, à l’odeur piquante et irritante pour les yeux et les voies respiratoires à partir d’une certaine concentration. Ce polluant de l’air est principalement produit par la combustion d’éléments fossiles (charbon, pétrole, fioul) et la fonte de minerais contenant du soufre, au cours de laquelle les impuretés sont oxydées en dioxyde de soufre par l’oxygène (O2).

💡 Bon à savoir : Les niveaux de SO2 ont connu une baisse encourageante depuis les années 1990. Cette amélioration est due à plusieurs facteurs : l’abandon progressif des combustibles riches en soufre (charbon, fioul) au profit de combustibles plus propres (gaz naturel), limitant ainsi la teneur en soufre des combustibles.

Le dioxyde de soufre (SO2) : quelles sont les sources ? 

Le dioxyde de soufre (SO2) est un polluant primaire, c’est-à-dire directement émis par les activités humaines contrairement à d’autres polluants tels que l’ozone, les particules fines et une partie du NO2, qui sont des polluants secondaires (produits par la réaction chimique, ou photochimique d’un ou plusieurs polluants primaire).

Le SO2 est principalement émis lors de la combustion de matières fossiles, telles que le charbon et le pétrole.

Plus de la moitié est rejetée par les activités industrielles, y compris celles liées à la production d’énergie comme les centrales thermiques. Mais il est également répandu par le chauffage résidentiel ou des entreprises.

Le dioxyde de soufre provient également de l’activité volcanique, qui en est la première source naturelle. 🌋

Sources des composés organiques volatils en intérieur

À l’intérieur, les COV proviennent de nombreux produits utilisés quotidiennement au sein des bâtiments, tels que : les parfums, les bougies et feu x de cheminée, les vapeurs de cuisson, les meubles neufs, les produits d’entretien, les jouets pour enfants, etc.

💙 L’impact du SO2 sur la santé 

Le dioxyde de soufre (SO2) est irritant pour les yeux et les muqueuses. A forte concentration, ce polluant peut avoir des effets sur la santé comme affecter le système respiratoire et la fonction pulmonaire chez l’adulte (toux, gêne respiratoire, bronchite…) et provoquer ou aggraver les maladies respiratoires chez les personnes sensibles (asthmatiques, fumeurs, maladies respiratoires chroniques…).

💡 Bon à savoir : Valeurs limites en SO2 pour la protection de la santé humaine (Directive 2008/50/CE):

  • 350 μg/m3 en moyenne horaire, à ne pas dépasser plus de 24 fois par année civile, à respecter depuis le 1er janvier 2005.
  • 125 μg/m3 en moyenne journalière, à ne pas dépasser plus de 3 fois par année civile, à respecter depuis le 1er janvier 2005.

🌍 L’impact du SO2 sur l’environnement 

Le dioxyde de soufre est un polluant de l’air gazeux acidifiant pouvant être à l’origine de l’acidification de l’environnement en cas de concentrations trop élevées.

Une fois rejeté dans l’air et en présence d’eau, le SO2 se transforme en acide sulfurique H2SO4 provoquant le phénomène des pluies acides. Les conséquences de ces précipitations sont :

👉 Les dépôts acides sur les matériaux de construction, qui peuvent endommager le patrimoine architectural et culturel,

👉 L’acidification des eaux de surface qui peut tuer certaines espèces et affecte les chaînes alimentaires aquatiques d’eau douce et marine,

👉 La dégradation des sols qui entraine des effets néfastes sur la végétation et les plantes.

Par conséquent, les substances acidifiantes sont nocives pour l’écosystèmes. Les émissions de dioxyde de soufre sont aussi à l’origine de la formation de brouillards toxiques connus sous le nom de smog.

Comment se protéger et réduire les émissions du dioxyde de soufre (SO2) ?

Prévenir ou réduire les sources directes de SO2 peut être difficile, en particulier les émissions provenant de sources naturelles telles que les éruptions volcaniques. Mais voici quelques solutions à mettre en place :

👉 Le passage de combustibles à haute teneur en soufre à des combustibles à faible teneur en soufre (gaz naturel),

👉 La désulfuration des gaz de combustion dans les installations industrielles,

👉 La surveillance de l’environnement
