Rapport du GIEC 2022 : quelles sont les conséquences du réchauffement climatique sur la santé ?

Le dernier rapport du GIEC lance l’alerte, il nous reste 3 ans pour inverser la tendance des émissions des gaz à effet de serre et endiguer le réchauffement climatique et toutes ses conséquences. Quels impacts le réchauffement climatique a et aura sur notre exposome (santé-environnement) ?

🔔 Réchauffement climatique : un constat alarmant

Le GIEC est le groupe d’experts intergouvernementals chargés d’étudier l’évolution du climat, ses causes et ses impacts. Ils rendent public leur recherche sous forme de rapports. Crée en 1988 par le Programme des Nations Unies pour l’environnement (PNUE) et l’Organisation Météorologique Mondiale (OMM), il rassemble 195 Etats membres.

Leur étude est formelle il faut que les émissions de gaz à effet de serre plafonnent avant 2025 pour limiter le réchauffement climatique à 1,5°C ; cela vaut la peine d’être reprécisé mais ce réchauffement trop rapide est dû aux activités anthropiques (cad aux activités humaines) et n’est pas naturel. La trajectoire actuelle, avec des émissions de gaz à effets de serre en augmentation, conduirait à un réchauffement climatique d’au moins 3°C à moyen terme. Ce chiffre peut ne pas paraître alarmant et pourtant lorsqu’on parle de réchauffement de la planète, chaque dixième de degré compte ! Les effets du changement climatique sont nombreux.

🌡️ Une augmentation de quelques degrés : quels impacts sur l’environnement de vie ?

Pourquoi est-ce si important que le réchauffement planétaire ne monte pas à plus 1.5°C ? Les conséquences environnementales et sanitaires de 2°C sont déjà bien plus drastiques qu’à 1.5°C :

👉 L’élévation du niveau des océans/mers menacerait 10 millions d’individus en plus,

👉 Les vagues de chaleur seraient plus chaudes (+4°C),

👉 La perte de l’habitat naturel des vertébrés, insectes et plantes serait doublée et la biodiversité très fortement menacée,

👉 La réduction de la prise de poisson serait doublée (perte de 3 millions/tonne annuel),

👉 La baisse de rendements des cultures céréalières serait plus importante,

👉 Le stress hydrique (sécheresse) serait supérieur à plus de 50% à 2°C,

👉 Le risque de pluies torrentielles serait plus élevé,

👉 Plusieurs centaines de millions de personnes supplémentaires seraient exposées aux risques climatiques et à la pauvreté.

 

Toutes ces conséquences pour seulement un demi degré ! Si le réchauffement atteint 3°C ou plus les impacts seront encore plus dévastateurs.

💙 Des effets sur la santé physique et mentale

L’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) rapporte que le changement climatique est responsable d’au moins 150 000 décès par an, chiffre qui devrait doubler d’ici à 2030.

L’augmentation des températures n’a pas qu’un impact sur l’environnement. La santé et le bien-être de tous est impacté et doit être pris en compte pour envisager l’avenir de manière résiliente. Les principales conséquences du réchauffement climatique sur la santé à prévoir sont les suivantes :

👉 Santé mentale impactée par les perturbations météorologiques, climatiques, traumatiques, sociales et économiques,

👉 Chaleur extrême entraînant une hausse de la mortalité et morbidité pour les personnes vulnérables,

👉 Augmentation de l’apparition de maladies d’origine alimentaire et/ou hydrique,

👉 Augmentation de l’incidence des maladies à transmission vectorielle,

👉 Les maladies animales et humaines, y compris les zoonoses, apparaissent dans de nouvelles zones (Influenza aviaires ou porcins, coronavirus),

👉 Développement des cyanobactéries nocives d’eau douce,

👉 Augmentation des maladies respiratoires et cardiovasculaire suite à l’exposition de la fumée des feux de forêt, aéroallergènes et pollution atmosphérique,

👉 Recrudescence des évènements extrêmes (inondations, incendies, tempêtes…) et du nombre de morts associées.

 

Limiter la hausse des températures à un niveau inférieur à 2, de préférence à 1,5 degré Celsius est l’objectif de l’accord de Paris – un traité international juridiquement contraignant sur les changements climatiques. Il a été adopté par 196 Parties lors de la COP 21 à Paris, le 12 décembre 2015 et est entré en vigueur le 4 novembre 2016.

🏡 Réchauffement climatique : l’impact sur le quotidien en milieu urbain

Le réchauffement climatique est également à gérer au niveau urbain où il a des impacts sur la santé humaine, les moyens de subsistances et les infrastructures. Les points d’attention sont :

👉 Gestion des ilots de chaleurs et des extrêmes chaleurs qui aggravent les épisodes de pollution de l’air et limitent le fonctionnement des infrastructures,

👉 Prendre en compte les populations économiquement et socialement marginalisées qui sont souvent les plus impactées,

👉 Prévoir que les infrastructures y compris les transports, l’eau, l’assainissement et l’énergie peuvent être compromises par des évènements extrêmes et que cela entraîne pertes économiques et impacte le bien être.

🍃 Quelles actions mettre en place pour limiter le réchauffement climatique ?

Limiter le réchauffement climatique à 1.5°C nécessite de diminuer les émissions de gaz à effet de serre (dioxyde de carbone (CO2), méthane, protoxyde d’azote, l’ozone, halocarbures…). L’origine des émissions peut provenir de :

  • L’utilisation des combustibles fossiles (production d’énergie, industries, transports, secteur résidentiel et tertiaires…)
  • De l’occupations des sols (agricultures, industries, élevages, zones d’habitations…)
  • De la déforestation et combustion de bois,
  • L’utilisation des (hydro)chlorofluorocarbures pour les systèmes de réfrigération et climatisation.

📌 Quelques actions pour lutter contre le réchauffement climatique

Ainsi, voici quelques actions qui peuvent être prises à l’échelle des villes et au niveau individuel :

👉 Favoriser l’offre et l’utilisation des modes de transport doux (transport en commun, vélo, trains, marche…),

👉 Favoriser les circuits courts et les produits issus d’une agriculture raisonnée,

👉 Réduire le gaspillage alimentaire,

👉 Passer à une alimentation saine et durable (flexitarienne/végétarienne/circuit court…) dans la restauration collective et chez soi,

👉 Adapter la consommation d’eau et d’électricité et chauffage pour éviter le gaspillage,

👉 Augmenter la part d’utilisation des énergies renouvelables,

👉 Penser les villes pour réduire les ilots de chaleur,

👉 Construire/rénover pour des bâtiments aux performance énergétiques élevées,

👉Préserver le milieu naturel (limiter la déforestation, restauration des écosystèmes naturels, favoriser les espaces verts (puits à carbone) et les zones prioritaires pour la biodiversité (ZPB)).

✅ Les bénéfices de ces actions pour la santé humaine

Combattre le changement climatique grâce à des actions quotidiennes vont permettre d’améliorer la santé des populations : 

👉 Les modes de transport doux favorisent l’activité physique,

👉 Changer la manière de s’alimenter en favorisant les produits sains provenant de circuits courts favorise un régime alimentaire équilibré avec des fruits et légumes de saison. Or l’activité physique régulière et une alimentation saine contribue à réduire le risque de développer de nombreuses maladies chroniques (cardiovasculaires, diabètes, cancers…),

👉 Réduire les ilots de chaleur permet de diminuer la mortalité et morbidité associées,

👉 Le développement d’espaces verts favorise à la fois l’activité physique et est reconnu pour avoir un effet positif sur la santé mentale,

👉 Des bâtiments aux bonnes performances énergétiques améliorent le bien être des occupants.

Le réchauffement climatique n’est pas à sous-estimer, il ne reste que 3 ans pour le limiter. Des actions doivent être prises à chaque échelle – mondiale, gouvernementale, ville, entreprise, individuelle – pour stabiliser la hausse des températures en inversant la tendance des émissions de gaz à effet de serre et ainsi freiner le réchauffement.

En parallèle, il faut s’adapter pour maintenir un bon niveau de santé et bien-être des populations dans le contexte actuel où les impacts se font déjà ressentir. Préserver l’environnement c’est éviter des morts prématurées et l’augmentation des morbidités en assurant par exemple une meilleure qualité de l’air, en limitant les menaces climatiques extrêmes (canicules, inondations, incendies, tempêtes…), en réduisant le stress hydrique…
