There is no single Air Quality Index (AQI)

The Air Quality Index (IQA) – or Air Quality Index (AQI) in English – is a standardized measurement system used in many countries to assess ambient air quality. There are several air quality indices worldwide due to the diversity of environmental policies, regulatory standards, and regional air quality specifics.

Each country or region may have its own air quality objectives, sources of pollution, and thresholds for atmospheric pollutants. Air quality indices vary depending on the parameters measured, rating scales, and pollutants considered.

💡 Good to know: However, there are also international standards, such as those defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), which serve as a reference for assessing air quality on a global scale.

All these differences make it difficult to compare data between countries. Companies seeking accurate information on air quality encounter challenges in consolidating the various existing indices in a clear manner.

We realized the importance of having a simple and easy way to read air quality data, regardless of geographical location. However, while knowing air quality is important, it’s even better to anticipate its effects on health!

That’s why we developed the Meersens Air Quality Index (MAQI). This index combines real-time and long-term exposure indices to simplify them for better public understanding.

How the Meersens Air Quality Index (MAQI) works

The index is based on pollutant concentrations according to WHO standards and those of countries worldwide, depending on the duration of exposure. The index helps to better understand the health risks associated with a specific concentration of pollutants by indicating the maximum exposure time before health problems occur.

Compared to other indices, it provides a better understanding of risks and facilitates the drafting of recommendations to avoid dangers associated with poor air quality.

The Meersens Air Quality Index (MAQI) is a powerful tool that allows us to monitor the quality of the air we breathe and take action to protect our health and the environment.

The MAQI scale ranges from 0 = ‘Good’ to 100 = ‘Very bad’ with 6 categories, corresponding to exposure time before there is a risk of health impact, color-coded.

Air quality significantly influences health by causing respiratory problems such as asthma and allergies. Fine particles, ozone, and other pollutants are responsible for these impacts, associated with cardiovascular issues, headaches, fatigue, and long-term cognitive problems.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) provides real-time crucial information about air quality, enabling individuals and public health officials to take preventive measures to protect the population.

In summary, a high AQI signifies an increased health risk, while a low AQI indicates a lesser impact.
